The Smart Pollution Monitoring Buoy, an engineering system, is a conceptually designed device to monitor environmental parameters related to the salinity level, temperature, and pollution of the sea. The primary purposes of this device are to measure variations in water, process the measured data, and provide remote access to the recorded data. Engineering requirements identify the properties that meet user needs, design limits, and performance level. Criteria evaluated at this stage contain measurement accuracy, environmental endurance, energy consumption, communication, and cost. The aim is for the established requirements to be as feasible, measurable, and verifiable as possible.
0.0. Measurement Requirements
The system shall measure water temperatures between 0-00°C, enable a variation of ±0.0°C.  This range has been determined to include variations in temperature in warm and temperate coastal waters. The measurement system shall maintain this level of accuracy across the expected water temperature limits in the area where the buoy will be placed. In this way, temperature changes in the aquatic environment can be monitored and environmental conditions can be evaluated. The accuracy target is supported by the technical specifications of current temperature sensors. The measurements will be compared against a calibrated reference thermometer at various points and verified.
Regarding salinity levels, the system shall measure the salt content in the water within a range of 0–00,000 ppm. The target accuracy for this measurement is ±0% of the full-scale after calibration. ±0% full-scale accuracy target was selected based on the performance achievable with current salinity sensors after calibration. Measuring salinity levels at specific intervals will help us observe changes in water salinity over time. Reference solutions with various salinity values will be used to verify the quality of the measurements.
